21st, 23rd and 24th july

Oh no... so busy the past week that I haven't been blogging about training. Anyway here goes

21 july 2010

Today there was a surprise: Chaang Ru came for training. Although I didn't get to work much on my skills, his presence brought out some some interesting characteristics in the team that I would like to highlight. He also said some things that made me think.

About the team

  • We must not allow ourselves to be run on emotion. As cheerleaders we are to stay motivated and happy, regardless of the situation, stress, whether we are winning or losing. Today some of us, many of us, were defeated by mere words and emotion, something that we must not let happen.

  • We must allow for different perspectives, be they right or wrong. When we hear something different, it allows us to see our skills and stunts from a new perspective, and we must actively assess the dimensions from which we approach our stunts, and we can learn better and judge whether our techniques are correct, or need to be changed.

  • Never run your stunts on "feeling". Try to understanf your stunts, the physics of it, why you do certain things and not others. Develop a full appreciation of every detail of a stunt, and when you can fully understand it, you will be more consistent. For example, I used to run my backtucks by feeling, until I actively assessed the physics of the jump, the posture, the timing. Only then I fully understood the reason for some motions, and theby was able to do it better.

Nothing personal to blog about in todays training.

24th July 2010: My first cupie!!!!!!
Stuntfest today! I learned many things:

  • My single toss has been wrong for a while. I can afford to stand a little further back, feet only shoulder width apart, and toes pointing forward.

  • When bringing up the liberty, complete the motion by pushing up with my shoulders. Also, my switch should take place much later. My current reference point is past the top of my head.. see if that works.

  • I did my first cupie!! Not really sure what to do or whther I'm doing it right but I'll just keep working on it. Turns out I AM strong enough.

In the recent weeks I keep learning that I am actually strong enough to do many things. We just need to work the courage to ask for an opportunity to try.

Cheers
Alpha Joe

  1. Cheerleading is fun because it is a group sport. People bond through hardships, sorrow and tears, joy and laughter. And tt's through these emotions, we learn to support each other and stay strong as a team.

Feeling the stunt is a correct thing to do only after you get your basics right. Different bases/flyers have diff stunt execution, esp single stunt. And tt's when you need to feel your flyer/base to get yourself up. Sometimes, u need to feel the stunt to protect flyer/base from danger too.But either how, practice makes the stunt perfect.

  2. bro,

at the end of the day, you live your own cheerleading. what has worked for me, might not work for you. And vice-versa. Always try to keep a balance of being harsh, being nice and committing to a ''necessary evil.''

Find your own formula and I am confident Alpha will be a great team to watch next year!
